Tjerk Nagel, Konaxx Onions:
Onion prices are slightly under pressure due to large off-land supply.
The onion harvest in Friesland is above average this year. We have had rain, but not like in other growing areas and it certainly did not lead to major problems with grubbing up. The onions are of good quality, says Tjerk Nagel of Konaxx Onions from Sint Jacobiparochie, which restarted this year.
We’ve had a weather market for a while. Now prices are under pressure, because everything is offered offland at the same time. That has a slight influence on the price, but I am convinced that things will be okay again, Tjerk continues.
So far, quite a quantum has been gone. Africa remains well on the market. Brazil is failing for a while due to the current economic conditions, but that is no reason to panic. The onion market is characterized by waves and now we are all waiting for a new round of applications.
